Fluid Chillers Systems
In Industrial Heating and Cooling, the water-cooled, air-cooled and Fluid Chillers Systems are basically designed to save energy. In most data centers, larger amount of energy is lost in form of heat which is dissipated to the surrounding environment. The centrifugal chillers with a heat recovery system recovers this heat which is dissipated to the environment and uses it to benefit or run other processes within the system.
Free cooling is not only possible during winter, but also in warmer climatic conditions. The amount of energy it can save during warm seasons is limited to the cooling water temperature or ambient-air. Other than the free cooling chilling sytems, dehumidification cycle also plays a significant role when it comes to saving the amount of electricity which is consumed by the data center.
Dehumidification cycle refers the cooling and reheating process which takes place simultaneously.Normally, the reheating process is not recommended since more energy is used during the process. However, for southern locations, it is a necessity since the high-humidity levels in the air or vapor-pressure puts the entire data center at risk.
In fact, these data centers have hot water reheat coils and most industrial chillers have about 90% continuous air to air heat exchanger system to the hot water loop which is used in the system. It ranges between 90°F and 110°F which are ideally meant for reheating purposes.
Fluid Cooling Systems
In most of these applications, a series heat recovery system is preferred to the parallel types. In series heat recovery systems, the hot discharge refrigerant only goes to the condenser after passing through the heat exchanger system. Furthermore, there are no additional refrigeration controls for the fluid cooling sytems which are required at this point making the maximum available heat to be supplied in the hot-water loop. Thus, the cooling required during dehumidification can easily be compensated by the reheat system.
The Fluid Chillers Systems can either be water or air-cooled chillers. Those Chilled Water Systems, which do not have this feature can always be fitted with one if necessary.The Fluid Chiller installation costs varies depending on the type of the reheating element to be installed. Usually, the chiller system installation costs of a low-pressure hot water coils which has control valves in computer-room-air-conditioning (CRAC-) unit is slightly higher than that of the electrical heater coils with its associated controls.
It is worth noting that the amount of energy which can be saved through the processes totally outweighs the installation costs. In addition to all these, it is also important to note that higher condensing temperatures reduces the efficiency of the fluid chiller significantly.
Installing efficient HVAC in larger data centers will significantly reduce the amount of energy wasted as a result of heat being dissipated to the environment. Installing chillers which feature winter free cooling or even the Fluid Chillers Systems are important. All these systems do not have negative impacts to the environment and hence mostly recommended.
